Mac shipments up 7.3% year-on-year, reports IDC, despite a tough U.S. market

Mac shipments in Q4 2017 were up 7.3% year-on-year, according to IDC data. Apple substantially outperformed the PC market as a whole, which grew by just 0.7%.

The growth saw Apple boost its market share from 7.7% in Q4 2016 to 8.2% in the same quarter last year …

IDC said that growth in the PC market had been largely driven by business demand, rather than by consumer purchases – and most growth was in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The company said that the U.S. PC market remained a tough one due to competition from mobile devices.

The United States market experienced a decline in shipments in the fourth quarter of 2017 with a drop in both notebook and desktop sales despite reports of a strong holiday quarter […]

“The solid holiday consumer sales provided enough momentum for the PC market to stabilize a bit further,” said Neha Mahajan, senior research analyst, Devices & Displays. “However, the growing popularity of other mobile form factors continued to have a dampening effect and led the overall U.S. PC market to perform below expectations.”

Across the year as a whole, Apple increased its worldwide market share from 7.1% to 7.6%, remaining in fourth place behind HP, Lenovo and Dell.
