Move over FaceTime, it’s WhatsApp’s time now.
The Facebook-owned messaging app has been flirting with video calls for some time, trialling the feature earlier this year, but now it appears ready to release it in full.
The option was spotted by Android Police, with WhatsApp reportedly rolling out video calls to Android users over the coming days.
According to the outlet, the feature has been available on recent WhatsApp beta builds on Android, though the rollout appears to be random.
Those winning the app’s lottery will be able to make video calls by tapping a contact’s name and hitting the new icon, though their partner, of course, will also require the latest version of Android to ensure face-filled calls.
With the move prioritising Android users, it appears those on iOS will have to wait just that little bit longer to seamlessly weave from getting roasted in a group chat to the warmth of a video chat.
People already have a myriad of options when it comes to video calls, such as Skype, Google Hangouts and Apple’s FaceTime, so whether WhatsApp’s integration alone can help it become the go-to for face-needy callers remains to be seen.
